Tuesday Thoughts

So I was thinking (yes I know, I do that sometimes...lol). I was thinking about my favorite quote...you know the one that I have on this website..."Do or do not, there is no try" from the master Jedi himself Yoda. Right at the basic level it means you are either doing or not. You don't just try it. However, in reality once you do start to "try" something...you are doing it! Yoda wasn't saying you had to be an expert right away, you just had to start. Isn't that where most of us get hung up on? We want to start something new, "try" something new and we stop ourselves because we are worried of failing or not being good at that new thing. Yet all we need to do is "try" and start doing.

By doing, by taking that first step toward our goals, we are making progress. As we make progress we learn and grow and gain knowledge. Yes, there may be times we fall down or fail or go backwards and you know what? That is okay. It is all part of the learning curve. All of the masters we know at something all started somewhere, all had a hard road to travel to get to where they are. If you ask them, they will tell you that the road was hard, they failed, they fell down, they struggled, but they kept pushing forward.

Back to the quote...in this case "trying" is just sitting there and thinking about what you want to do, about what you want to accomplish. Yes, thinking can be an action, but in reality to start doing you need to get up and actually do something. I know that first step to learn something new, to start a new fitness routine, to start eating healthier is daunting, but it is a step that must be taken. Maybe you don't know how or where to start? That's okay, just start. Maybe it's looking at YouTube videos, maybe it's visiting a gym to sign up, maybe it's hiring a health coach to guide you (like me!), maybe it's buying vegetables instead of junk food. It doesn't matter, it's a step in the right direction of your goals.

As you make progress toward your goals, this new thing you are "trying", this is where you become the master. And who knows, by becoming the master you thus then inspire the next young padawan to take their first step and for them to start doing. So the next time you hear "Do or do not, there is not try", you can smile and say that you are doing by trying. Yoda would be proud.
