What Inspires Me

At Stars, Sharks, and Shells LLC, I believe that there are four key elements to one’s complete wellness.  I am borrowing the concept of the four elements from the ancient Greeks.  Ancient Greeks such as Plato, Socrates, and Hippocrates believed that there were four essential elements that made up all living things.  Those elements were Fire, Air, Earth, and Water and together they helped you reach the Aether (wellness).  Stars, Sharks, and Shells LLC. is taking that basic view and transferring it into the fitness/health coaching industry.  I believe that the four key elements to overall wellness are Strength (Fire), Cardio (Air), Nutrition (Earth), and Healing (Water).  Not only that, each symbol in the Stars, Sharks, and Shells LLC logo is representative of each of those elements.  When put all together they help you achieve overall wellness (aether).

Stars--Strength Training (Fire)

Why is strength training fire?  Fire is red and it is hot!  The muscles in your body are red and when they are worked produce heat.  What is strength training?   Strength training is defined as the use of resistance to contract the muscles in order to increase their size, endurance and strength.  Resistance can be your own body weight or such things as dumbbells, tubing, machines, and kettle bells.  Benefits of doing strength training include but are not limited to increase in lean body mass (muscles), increase in bone density, increase in your energy needs (metabolism) and improving muscular balance and endurance.

 

The Invisible Breeze--Cardio Training (Air)

Cardio is short for cardiovascular training.  Why is this air?  The air we breath contains oxygen, which is a necessity for all of your living cells to function.  That is where the lungs come in, the lungs transfer that oxygen from the air you breath into the blood that circulates in your body.   So when doing cardiovascular (cardio) training we are working our heart and lungs.  It is important to do this because it helps to: improve heart and lung capacity, improves your metabolic rate, decreases your risk for cardiovascular disease and helps to maintain hormonal balance. 

           

Shells--Nutrition (Earth)

Out of all four elements, this should be the most obvious.  Earth is what provides us nutrition.  We can’t grow our food any other way.   This is also the most complicated element.  We are all different!  Therefore we have different nutritional needs and different energy needs for our fitness goals.  Balanced nutritional intake is important for the following reasons: provides energy/fuel for our bodies, provides essential vitamins and minerals, can improve our immune system function and eating the right foods has been shown to help preventable diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

 

Sharks--Healing/Recovery/Relaxation (Water)

Water is essential.  We can only survive days without water, where if we were without food we could survive weeks.   We are made up of 60% water, so it is important we maintain a steady intake.   Why does water represent healing?  First it keeps our bodies hydrated and that helps us to recover from any activity that we do.  Hydrotherapy is a known form of healing our aching muscles from hard strenuous work.  Listening to the sound of water, whether if it’s a trickling fountain or ocean waves, helps us to relax.  Relaxing our bodies is just as important as working our bodies out.  We all need to rest and take time for ourselves, it helps our muscles recover as well as helping our minds find peace.

My name is Brenda and I am so excited to meet you!!  I have 30+ years of experience in the health and fitness industry.  My background includes a bachelors in Dietetics, a masters in Sports Nutrition, I'm a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, and a certified Health and Wellness Coach.  During my career,  I have worked with all ages, abilities, and fitness levels.  I now want to share my knowledge and expertise with you so you can achieve your health and wellness goals!!  I am passionate about what I do and I want to share that passion with you! I can help you to lose weight, reduces stress, create a better eating plan, and everything in between.  You already have the potential in you to reach your goals, but I can help you to unlock and use that potential!
